I remembered a story that appeared in an annual of "Battle Pictue Weekly" that was rather good.
(I think it's still up my Auntie's house, might have to have a look for it.)
Started off in a Zepplin Raid in WW1, a mother singing her young son to sleep.
    Bomb hits house mother killed.
Boy gets sent to orphanage, gets into trouble & always fighting.
Sent to court an it is suggested he joins Army, he does but always in trouble , drunk & fighting.
His day comes in retreat to Dunkirk where he holds off the Germans so his mates can escape.
Last seen in a hail of German bullets firing a Bren gun suffering from multiple wounds whilst singing the song his mother sang the night she died.

Must have been 30+ years ago I first read that I always thought it was a great little story, I wonder if it was based on someone the author knew?

IIRC the song was "A Long, Long Trail A-Winding", the WWI song.

Coming to this late, bit going back to the very first post on this - did the idea of the "one friendly German" appear AFTER we voted to join the EEC in the 1970s???

Before we got married my husband accompanied me to meet my grandparents in Germany. They could not speak a word of English, so I was translating back and forward. Husband suddenly says in slooow English to my Grandfather, "don't worry, I can speak some German".

    ...

"Achtung Spitfeuer! Ach, mein glorious Panzer Division! Gott in Himmel & Hande hoch, Britischer pigdogs"

Wonder where he learned that curious mixture of German and English then ...
