I have a letter from my Great Uncle Herbert Legate mentioned above, who died in this raid in 1942. His sister - my grandmother - recently died just weeks after making her 100th birthday. She left my dad some letters and pictures of Bert, one of which was a letter dated 19th November 1942 on the day of the raid. It reads as though he knew he would not return alive from this raid, a very sad reflective letter quite unlike all his other letters home. I will try and scan it and upload it to this thread if anyone is interested.

    Beamobhoy,

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

I am sure that a scan of the letter would be welcomed by the Membership.

    Regards

When looking through my books to select three for this forum I opened "Assault in Norway" to find some photos that I took when I was there in the 1970's.
Perhaps someone might find them interesting.
During this time I travelled extensively throughout the UK and Europe as an engineer spending sometimes a day at a site and up to several months at others.
Sitting in the hotel in Rjukan I noticed a huge map on the wall which displayed the route taken by the saboteurs. May of the locals could recall the events and it made a fine talking point on cold snowy nights. I had a hire car with tungsten studded tyres which I used to get around and took several photos.

On other occasions I was in Berlin (with a wall around it) Bogen Fjord near Narvik where Warspite shattered the windows every time they fired the guns and I first saw the Northern Lights.Florence, Bordeaux and Normandy where I took several photos of gun emplacements etc. I could probably find a few if anyone is interested in seeing them. I will have to find a suitable thread to place them on.

Hi, I am trying to compile any information regarding the participants of Operation Freshman as part of a follow up to the book, Silent Heroes, by Ion Drew. If you have any material related to your great uncle it would be of great interest. Best regards, Bruce
