Can anyone tell me what the difference between the Tiger tank and the Panther tank are? I know that the panther has thicker armor then the tiger, but as far as I know all the rest are the same. for instance, the caliber on the guns are the same (88mm) and they look pretty the same.

    Thanks. :cowboy_125:

the Panther did not have an 88mm gun, it was 75mm

I've been puzzling over this query panzerschreck, and I'm afraid I don't really understand the question.
Each of those vehicles springs from a rather different design philosophy (based as much on the time period they were initiated in as military/technological factors) and in detail/general technical (and even tactical) terms really don't have that much in common at all, for instance, both may be on Torsion bar interleaved wheels but the actual means used to achieve that configuration are a long way apart.
We could say that 'all tanks are similar', in that each has a Gun/MG/Tracks/turret etc. etc. but other than that I don't think these two are really that reminiscent of each other at all?

    Cheers,

There were very significant differences in their vulnerability. Tiger had thick armour all round. Panther's was better sloped, but thin enough on the sides and rear to be seriously vulnerable in a melee, which is why it was best employed in prepared defensive roles.

They had similar engines and optics. Panther's HV 75mm exceeded Tiger's older 88 in armour penetration. There was nearly 20 tons weight difference. Like von Poop says, there's not a whole lot in common.

Ain´t you talking about the Tiger I and the King Tiger? Or the Panther and the Jagdpanther?

However, in any case, none of the 4 vehicles looks anything like the others.

By the way, sorry for chipping in, V.P., you´re the big cheese here :D

Has.... "The Panther was not as thickly armoured, nor as heavily armed, as tanks such as the Tiger but was probably a much more balanced design. It was one of the fastest German tanks, highly manoeuvrable and equipped with an accurate weapon. Its worst defect was a propensity to catch fire if the engine backfired."

The Panther stemmed from the thought of a tank like the Russian T34 tank, hence the sloped armour. The Panther was equipped with a high-velocity 75mm gun, whereas the Tiger was equipped with the 88mm Flak gun. The Tiger had thicker armour on the sides, but they are seen as "cousins". King Tiger was drawn off the Panther as the "Panther II" prototype wasn't ready.
