Hello all, i need some help in tracing the service records of a relative of mine, my great uncle. I have traced other relatives in the past so i'm no stranger to the process but the difference here is that i do not know who he served with and i am at bit of a dead-end before i've even started! The gent in question is 'Jack E. Godding' from Reading, born 1924. I know from my dad that he served with 14th Army and according to him he was a POW at some time, but nothing more. I've searched most of the online POW records with no luck although i know they are not 100 per cent accurate. The local Burma Star association are on my list to contact, any other tips on where to go next would be appreciated. Many thanks, Mac
Sorry for not replying earlier but i've been away from the computer. No pics i'm afraid. A real dead-end.
Have you considered applying for his service records? They will tell you all the units he served with and when. You only need a date of birth and full name to apply. You will need NOK approval and proof of death also to apply. Cheers Andy
Thanks Drew, i've done that a few times in the past and in my experience they won't even think about it without a regiment or number which is bit of a catch-22 !
All you need is a name, date or birth, NOK approval and proof of death. A service number helps speed the search up but is not essential. No need to know the regiment. Many men, quite a lot in my experience changed regiments as was required as the war progressed. My G/F's grandad served with 3 different infantry regiments until he was wounded.
Well, you know he's Jack Edward Godding, born 18 Sept 1924 and died February 1991, in Reading District and that he married Phyllis C Brookin 1st Qtr 1948 in Wokingham. Is there no other family member that can assist, surely Phyllis has relatives that could be traced who might have the info you need?
Thanks Kev, i do know all of that information already but unfortunately it's next to useless when researching military records. Unfortunately there are no relatives.
Hi, I think I may be able to help!! Jack Edward Godding of Reading is my father! I klive in france at the moment but return to Reading quite often. Sadly, some of the facts about my father are incorrect. If you wish, you can email me at advertising-calendars@gmail.com I am intrigued as to who you are! With a username of Mac, could you possibly be a McNiffe? I look forward to hearing from you!
