Hi, Has anyone got the WY war diary for the 24th June 1941? I’m researching Trooper Payne who was wounded on this date. From what I can gather he was the only one so thought he might get a mention. Thanks
This book may have the answer: From: WARWICKSHIRE YEOMANRY IN PALESTINE | colonialfilm The text indicates the regiment were mechanised by time of the Syrian campaign. This link refers to mechanisation being in late 1941 and comes from a local online newspaper. Note this passage: From: https://www.warwickshireworld.com/n...some-of-the-toughest-campaigns-in-ww2-2875994 Perhaps the author could help? This article suggests the regiment and two others - as horsed cavalry - suffered from Vichy French air attacks in the Syrian campaign (known as Operation Explorer). See: The Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry (RWY) in Syria. Operation Exporter June 1941. There is a campaign map on: From Palestine to Persia and Back: The Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry - Aspects of History
If you are familiar with the WY Museum in Warwick you may know of this but others on the forum might be interested. Interesting names too. My father sold Flowers Beer in the 1950's made in Stratford on Avon.
A book mentioned by the Warwickshire Yeomanry Museum might be of interest. 'Yeomen Yeoman - The Warwickshire Yeomanry 1920-1956' by Paul BAKER
Here are the pages from that cover 24 June 1941 from "Yeoman Yeoman" plus the Roll of Honour page mentioning Trooper Payne.
