This is my interpretation of a Diamond T980/Scammell Mid-Production Trailer with a Churchill Mk II. It was submitted to the WVEE in 1942 by Shelvoke & Drewry at the request of the WD to evaluate a Diamond T tractor with a 30 Ton trailer. A successful outcome would lead to S&D making their own design 30 T trailer which supplemented the supply of Scammell combinations with over 400 units being produced. The S&D version will be the subject of a future model. It is the Revell/Matchbox tractor with an Airfix Scammell trailer and Airfix Churchill Mk VII all modified from the original kits. The figures are Milicast as is the turret for the Churchill. The wheels for the trailer and tracks for the Churchill were 3d printed by Stu Harrison. Mike Starmer also helped with the colour scheme. My thanks goes to these folk and especially Dick Harley who literally shepherded me through this one as converting an Airfix Mk VII to the Mk II on the trailer was quite a project. It couldn't have happened without Dick's input.
What more is there left to say about Neil's models. I have collected photogaphs of 88 of his models and made a folder with notes. This is a first class reference for one who is interested in model vehicles, real vehicles or just enjoy outstanding works of art and craftmanship. In many ways Neil's models are more useful than photographs or even the real thing. In model form you can view the vehicle from all angles. Always thoroughly researched, meticulously modelled and detailed, plus that something extra which is difficult to define. Mike. PS. Not all of his models have appeared on this site but have appeared on others. I hope I have not been embarssingly effusive. Not quite the thing for an English gentleman old chap.
Hi Mike, Wow....what can I say to this glowing tribute to my efforts? I am rather red-faced about it but at the same time, sincerely appreciate your generous comments regarding my models. I draw my inspiration from photos of the various prototypes but also from photos of models including those in your Trux range you so thoroughly and expertly covered years ago. I also draw on the individual talents of fellow enthusiasts like Dick Harley, Mike Starmer, Les Freathy, Richard Allebone and Petr Dusek to name a few and who I am proud to call friends and who have selflessly contributed to my efforts with their knowledge, input and inspiration. I am really heartened that you value my models to the extent you describe and hope I can continue to add to your collection. Currently on the bench is a 1/72 GMC 2.5 Ton Pontoon carrier which is about ready for paint (inspired by Petr Dusek) and that will be followed by an Albion CX24S with a Higgins Boat load. The latter is still being researched and elsewhere on the forum (RASC-Unit Histories) I have solicited AoS info for the 372nd TT Coy RASC at the Rhine Crossing. As usual, any input from you would be very welcome. Thanks again Mike for your kind comments. Cheers, Neil
