    Details of the above loss.....

    17-18 July 1941

    149 Squadron
    Wellington IC N2853 OJ-R
    Op. Cologne

The aircraft took off from Mildenhall at 2341 hrs and was hit by flak, on the return the pilot decided to make an emergency landing. While doing so he was blinded by a searchlight team stationed at Cockfield, 9 miles north north east of Sudbury, Suffolk. With night vision lost the aircraft crashed at 0105 hrs through a line of trees busting into flames on impact.

    Bomber Command Losses Vol.2 - W R. Chorley

Sadly, out of the crew of six, Sgt. Gibbins was the only crew member to lose his life, the other five being injured.

My dear brother Jack was also the only member of his crew to lose his life and I know too well the special pain that this causes to his next of kin.

    Lest we forget

I know this is an old post - but I wanted to say Thank You.

Peter was my husband's Grandmother's Brother.
We actually spoke of him just yesterday with her about her brother and she showed us a picture - saying how young he was and did not have time to have a family of his own.

    Many Thanks.

Small world! Hello Peter! I am happy to hear from you..... they seem to have lost touch what that side of the family - but I will be sure to let my Grandmother in law know of your message! She will be thrilled. :D
