I have been researching a Sergeant (John W Lance) who spent the war rising through the ranks in LAA regiments. He joined in 1939 and by 1943 had been posted to quite a few different Light anti aircraft regiments. It has taken me almost seven months researching his life during the war from start to finish and during this time, I have come to realise how important the use of sharing photographs has been. I was lucky enough to find pictures of him in Germany in 1945. This would not have been possible if it wasn't for the relatives of John's comrades and their willingness to share such personal images. Therefore I have obtained consent from his family to share a picture on this forum with the intention of helping others locate relatives and possibly even contact me with any other pictures they have. The photograph attached was taken in 1942 in Aberystwyth. On the reverse of the photograph it say that it is taken by ???ACKFORD&SON PHOTOGRAPHERS ABERYSTWYTH. Research has led me to believed that during 1942, John was posted to 224 LAA training REGT RA of which was based in Aber at the time. If you recognise anyone in this photograph, or have any information, feel free to post below. Shaun Coldicutt

Hi I am looking to find more about this Training Regiment which was based in Aberystwyth. I can't find a war Diary for instance. Any help appreciated. Thanks
My site, RA 1939-45. Most of my references for training units has come from the RA Commemeration Book & Gunners at Larkhill.
I recently discovered that my great uncle served in the 90th LAA. This regiment was created from the 7th Btn South Wales Borderers (converted from the 50th Holding Btn in 1940). He was transferred from the 7th Btn SWB to the 90th LAA RA on 15 November, 1941. For years I’ve had in my possession photographs taken in Aberystwyth (I’ve attached one of them). He also would talk about some of his experiences when he was there (it’s the only part of his war service he ever mentioned). In the photographs he is wearing his SWB cap badge but I was never able to connect the SWB with training in Aberystwyth. However, is it possible he was there for light anti-aircraft training following the transfer of the 7th Btn SWB to the RA but that they would still be wearing the insignia of the SWB? This would likely be around late 1941 into 1942. Apart from this thread, I’ve been able to find out very little else about Aberystwyth possibly being a location for LAA training.
