The attached list is transcribed from a typed document held by Major C.B. Stone, D.S.O. (O.C. 262nd Field Company, R.E.) and used by him from 6th June 1944 onwards. Spelling has been reproduced as typed, unless noted thus in square parentheses: [ ]. I would be pleased to hear an account of anyone listed. E&OE
J Barrett of Wislaw, this will be Wishaw - I walked past his house about 3 weeks ago coming home from the football
I'm writing a paper about 262, that I hope to have published. If you have any recollections and/or memorabilia I'd be pleased to hear from you.
Sure, I'll dig a few bits out for you and some notes I made before he died (nearly 30 years ago now). Give me a few days and send a reminder in a week (just in case).
The grandson of a 26 Sapper is trying to do some research on him, its on the REHS facebook page. He may have some info
My great uncle was Maj Stone - I'd love to find out more about 262, and what happened at DDay and thereafter. I have a picture of him talking to Eisenhower just before the landings. After the war he was a structural engineer and became president of the Institute of Structural Engineers in 1970. He died in 2006. He was a quiet, modest man and like all the others I'm sure never talked about his service and was always encouraging of young people to study hard etc. He went to night school and studied for his degree in London (I think Battersea Poly) while working prior to the war having come from a middle class background of relatively modest means.
Hi Graham, Major Stone was my Great Uncle, so we will be related in some way! I have done a lot of research into his war. I can be contacted at LINK. Regards, David
My grandfather was DBA Bevan - known as Aelwyn. It's great being able to put pieces together about what he did and where he went. I'll post updates as I find out more. Thanks for sharing this
