    Hi Drew.

Unfortunately that's the best I can get.

However, I've had a thought. He definitely married in the June quarter of 1940, the marriage being registered in Wolverhampton. Therefore it has to be unlikely that he would be serving in a Gloucestershire Territorial Unit doesn't it? Unless he was a regular in the Gloucestershire Regiment or the Berkshires? In which case his marriage certificate might prove revealing.

    Cheers

Having checked the books best guess so far, and given the area of the country that has been mentioned it could make sense:unsure:

    Here's a thought.

If we got a copy of his marriage certificate from the June Quarter of 1940, shouldn't that reveal his occupation?

yes, in theory, yes it would. however, ive been married 3 times and each time it shows a different occupation on my marriage certs - so, although im probably not a good example, it may not give you a definitive answer lol.

re the question of the regiment.... im no expert on cap badges, in fact i wouldnt have a clue, but the question i ask is what sort of "catchment area" did regiments have so far as recruiting goes? Ok - so, we know the chap in question was from the wolverhampton, bilston, west mids area. Is it beyond belief that the South Staffs, Glosters were not actually his local regiments? South Staffordshire and Gloucestershire are certainly not a million miles away.

    Kevin ...

bearing in mind that people are suggesting the badge may be that of the Glosters, and that there seems to be a distinct memory of Dunkirk, can i offer you this ...

i quote website: Gloucestershire Regiment - Military Genealogy

"The 2nd battalion was involved in the battle of France after Germanys invasion of the Low Countries on May 8th 1940, taking part in the defensive screen protecting the Dunkirk evacuation."

There are many references to the Glosters and Dunkirk, 2nd battalion, 5th battalion etc etc, so ill throw my money in on an evens bet for it being the glosters - works for me ;-)

    1. When magnified the badge shown in the photograph the badge is surmounted by a crown not a Spninx.

    2. With regard to men from other areas - this was not unusual. The following is 1939 on - but shows men posted onto the nominal roll from other units'

2nd Royal Gloucestershire Hussars War Diaries

    3. The collar badges in the photograph are most definately not the 'Glosters'

    So, to recap....

He could have been Glosters, Berkshires, RGH or Derbyshire Yeomanry. If the photo was late 30's he may no longer have been serving or been in a reserved occupation. He may or may not have been at Dunkirk. Or he may have been transferred to an entirely different unit.

Think the best bet is for me to try and get the marriage cerificate for him tomorrow and hope that that solves the mystery by having Private, ******* Regiment in the occupation column. I suppose another avenue would be to look for a marriage notice in the local paper.

Thanks again to everyone for their help, it is appreciated.

    Kevin Mears

Scrub the Berks I was having a Mong Moment and as far as I'm aware a marraiage cert would just say something basic like 'Soldier'

Thanks Drew. But even confirming that he was in the Army at the time of his marriage would be something.
