Hi, I am trying to research this chap who is listed in his AB64 paybook as a POW from 9th March 1944 to Feb 1945. He is not listed in the POW published lists but as he was released in Feb 1945 it may have been that he was repatriated due to wounds because he was discharged from the army about 6 months later.

    Details are:

14532987 Pte Raymond Harvey AAC, enlisted 4th Feb 1943, served North africa 13th sep 1943 until POW on 9th March 1944.

Does anybody have any idea how he may have been taked POW as I thought the war in NA was pretty much over in 1944?

    Cheers,
    Rick

Something far wrong here as ALL fighting in North Africa finished on around the 12th May 1943….when the combined German/ Italian forces surrendered all 250K of them at Cap Bon

Tunisia….more likely he was wounded in Italy as the fighting was around the lower reaches of Cassino at that time- th AAC were involved in the Salerno landings of 9th September 1943

    might have been there…

    Cheers Tom,
I have since found out he was previously Royal welch Fusiliers who later passed his jumps course and served in Tunisia/Italy and was wounded in 6th bn Para regt. in his paybook (which is a replacement as original lost due to enemy action) it states POW 9.3.44, it may well be a mistake and should read ???? of wounds? then again he may have been taken POW and liberated from ahospital later in March 1944?
Could be a good reesarch project..
    Thanks again,
    Rick

It does look like he landed at Salerno as follow up to the initial landing of the 9thSeptember '43 - the clerk still entered "North Africa " when it should have been CMF - and possibly taken prisioner around Cassino in March '44...

    Thanks Tom,
he is not mentioned in the POW lists so I am assuming, he was wounded and POW then repatriated before the end onf the war. He died in 1996 so it will be a while before I can request his papers to confirm this...
    Cheers,
    Rick
