Award Croix de Guerre 1940 with Palm S/Sgt. Ralph Chamberlain, 179 Special Field Company, Royal Engineers (1899705)

For Outstanding service during the liberation of BRUSSELS and distinguished service at NAMUR during the battle of the Ardennes. 3rd September to 10th 1944 and 15th to 23rd December 1944.

The NCO during these two periods fulfilled the duty of his next senior officer who was absent from his unit through illness. During the first week of the liberation of BRUSSELS he showed the highest devotion to duty in carrying out his work of "delousing" the many premises occupied by the enemy in BRUSSELS to ensure that the search work of the specialist IB teams could be brought to a satisfactory conclusion.

He was responsible for the reconnaissance of the enemy ammunition dump in the Foret de Soignes and for the initial clearance of the prepared destruction charges left by the enemy to blow up this very large dump. Second by his conduct and example to the troops under his command and to civilians in the city of NAMUR when on the first night of his arrival at Namur on the 15th December in thick fog he prepared the vital road bridge at NAMUR for demolition, so that the enemy might have been denied the immediate used of the main route to BRUSSELS had they broken out from BASTOGNE.
