I am researching my Grandfathers Military Medal citation - "On 24 March 1945, A/Sgt Rummery was serving as platoon sergeant of 209 Field Company RE, building a bridge across the Rhine at Rees. During the afternoon, the site where his platoon was working on raft construction came under fire from shells and mortars that were sometimes so accurate that work had to be temporarily suspended. After each, the platoon returned to work with a calm determination which no doubt stemmed from A/Sgt Rummery's personal example. He showed complete disregard for his personal safety at all times and calmly walked from squad to squad taking turns leading and encouraging them. At the last break in work, he requested permission to continue in small groups on some tasks where they were in danger of being discovered by the enemy. This happened and, although enemy artillery resumed firing, A/Sgt Rummery and several others continued to work for over an hour until they were withdrawn by accurate mortar fire. By his exemplary conduct he encouraged his men to work long under danger with unwavering determination." Rummery, Ronald George - TracesOfWar.com
