Can anybody please recommend some good (first hand account type) books of the 8th Air Force attacking German targets in Europe? I've read 'Target Berlin' by J Ethell and A Price. Really good.
Not so much stories....but here is an excellent book I have that has lots of great pictures from the 8th Air Force. Amazon.com: 8TH AIR FORCE: American Heavy Bomber Groups in England 1942-1945: Gregory Pons: Books
There are many, and I have a lot of them. But the problem for people in the UK is that many are published only in the US, in quite small print-runs. Some of my favourites, which aren't too hard to find 'over here' , are ; - 'A Wing And A Prayer' by Harry H. Crosby ( 100th BG ) - essential ! 'A Fall Of Fortresses ' by Elmer H Bendiner ' Combat Crew' by John Comer I haven't given dates and publishers for these as they've been reprinted a few times in paperback. And don't forget : - 'The Schweinfurt-Regensburg Mission' by Martin Middlebrook......
If you wish to read about what it was like being on the receiving end, I highly recommend The Berlin Diaries by Marie (Missie) Vassiltchikov, a Russian princess who also witnessed during the war the passing of a way of life. JT

Thanks everybody for your recommendations. I've read both 'Combat Crew and the book by Martin Middlebrook. I feel a USAF in Europe moment coming on. Should dig out 'Memphis Belle' to watch again...............................
Another good one which has just come to mind ( again, about the Schweinfurt/Regensburg missions ) is Edward Jablonski's 'Double Strike' which includes plenty of first-hand recollections. Although published in the US in 1974 by Doubleday, copies do turn up over here......
These two books by the late Roger A Freeman are a must for anyone researching the USAAF involvement in the European airwar. First class reference books from a highly rated air historian. The Mighty Eighth Mighty Eighth War Diary
