Berliner Schloss - WW2 Bunker

I spent a happy hour watching the archaeology going on at the site of the Berliner Schloss in central Berlin last week. The Schloss is to rise again and there is a major archaelogical project going on while this happens. It is all on display for people to see, and typical of Berlin, there are regular free tours.

Unfortunately these were not on during the days I was in Berlin, but I noticed a group busily working away on this (below), which to me looks like a WW2 bunker. Were there air-raid shelters under the Schloss?

I've looked online and can't see any reports. Your thoughts welcome.

I have no info, Paul. But the thickness of the reinforced concrete is staggering.

    Paul,

I have no knowledge of WW2 Bunkers under the Schloss.

It was demolished by the Soviets after the war and they built the Palace of the Republic there which was their Party showpiece.

A massive steel and concrete structure which was recently demolished, but was used to house the Chinese Terrecotta Army exhibit here in Berlin, when I visited it a few years ago.

I can only thing that the concrete was part of the foundations, but I will ask around.

    Regards
    Tom

Tom, I initially thought that too, but where this is was under the car park for the Palace of the Republic.

    Paul,

I will ask our veterans on Wednesday morning at the Legion.
Perhaps we may get a difinitive answer.

Thanks - look forward to it!

I presume nothing in the Berlin papers about it?

    Great photo Paul

That reinforced concrete looks to be approx. 7 ft thick which seems far more than required for building support. The roof of the Fuehrer Bunker was a little over 11 ft. thick and the Reichs Chancellery bunker only 5 ft.

It makes one think that the production of concrete in the Third Reich must have been equally as lucrative as arms production.

    Paul,

Certainly nothing in the Berliner Morganpost that is delivered to our house.

Months ago there was a large piece about the old cellars found that date back to the middle ages apparently.

    Paul,

This is a good site about the history of the StadtSchloss in Berlin.

Although I can find nothing regarding WW2 bunkers in the area, I was wondering if what you photographs was perhaps part of a DDR Cold war Bunker designed for the High Ranking Party members should the bomb be dropped.

    Just a thought.
