I have just found out that my wifes uncle who was killed aboard LK635 of 428 Sqn had the following crew position:

on the records of another crew member James Wright is MU/AG.

I assume AG = Air Gunner but cannot find what MU would stand for.

Anyone have a clue what his job was and entailed?

    Cheers

    428 Squadron.
    Halifax V LK635 NA-H
    Op: Hannover

    Crew.
    F/O. H E. Mcrae RCAF +
    Sgt. D E. Jeffery +
    Sgt. L. Cotton +
    Sgt. W E. Dickson RCAF +
    Sgt. A R. Bohn +
    Sgt. J. Wright +
    Sgt. E G. Miller RCAF +

Took off 1828 hrs Middleton St.George. Lost without trace. All are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

711 aircraft - 322 Lancaster's 226 Halifax's, 137 Stirling's, 26 Wellingtons - on the first major raid to Hannover for two years; this was the first of a series of four heavy raids on this target. Five American B-17's also took part in the raid, their first night raid on Germany. 26 aircraft - 12 Halifax's, 7 Lancaster's, 5 Stirling's, 2 Wellingtons - lost.
Visibility in the target area was good but stronger winds than forecast caused the marking and the bombing to be concentrated between two and five miles south-south-east of the city centre.

Owen & Peter many thanks for the replies.

I will have a good read of the AG article.

Peter: Thanks for that I have been trying to trace the crash site for a while now and with the help of other researchers seem to have located a possible area. Our only problem now seems to be the CWGC, but that is another story.

    thanks again to you both.
