I have been left the medals on my maternal uncle but very little information. His name was Arthur BRIGGS but I am sure he had another forename.

He was born around about 1920 and resided In South West London

He joined the army and rose to the rank of Battery Sergeant Major in the Royal Horse Artillery serving through WW2 with 8th Army was known as a DESERT RAT
would be grateful for any information available so I can do his story justice.

    Hi

Does the LSGC medal have his name, service number and regiment on the rim?
    That will help.
There are some records online for artillery servicemen, but a service number is needed.
As noted above, his service records are the best start, then you may be able to get someone to access the specific war diaries from that record.

    regards

Many thanks. The medals are framed so it is difficult to see if there is anything on the rim and as it is well-framed I am loathe to take it apart yet, so hopefully someone will have more detail as I do not think he is Arthur W

Get hold of his death certificate, it will have his full name, age or date of birth which you will need for his service records. Do you know when/where?

As you are not 100% sure, first get his death certificate, that is essential, personally I would also get his birth certificate to confirm his full name, official documents are a must in any family history research anyway. When you apply for his service records (post #2) you do not need any military details, it states service number OR date of birth.

Royal Artillery attestation for info - if he was a pensioner there must be some paperwork somewhere.

Looked for a tracer card for Arthur Norton Briggs not found, but there are a few close numbers:

838115 Thomas KNIGHT joined 15.5.34, discharged to Class Z Reserve 1946, discharged from Reserve 1954 as overage.
838120 Lawrence Arthur MARRIOTT attested Hull 22.5.34, transferred to Z Reserve 1946
838124 William MOORE attested Sheffield 17.5.34, to Army Reserve 1937 mobilised in WW2
838129 George Johnstone IRELAND joined 1938, discharged 1949.

All look like regular soldiers as none of these cards mention the Territorial Army.
