Just an update from CWGC in case anyone is interested in Chris's hard work(and anyone else who finds a grave) and how it chugs along

Dear Clive

Thank you for your email regarding various grave found cases within the United Kingdom Area.

At present these cases, with the exception of Rifleman Charles Smith, are awaiting review with our Commemorations Department before they are forwarded onto UK Area for investigation. Due to an increase in discovery of remains and identification cases our Commemorations Department have had to focus their time and resources into investigating these as a priority. As you can imagine and appreciate, the COVID19 pandemic has also had an impact on our ability to progress with the backlog of cases. It is the intention of the team to start reviewing the grave found cases shortly.

Once the cases have been sent to UK Area, our team will conduct a ground check at the relevant churchyard/cemetery concerned before making their recommendations for commemoration of the casualty. If the commemoration is to be a screen wall, there is then further internal paperwork to complete and submit for agreement by various departments within CWGC.

The grave found case for Rifleman Smith has been completed and his name is due to be added to the screen wall in Islington Cemetery however, the screen wall at Islington consists of Bronze Panels, therefore we will be arranging for a new panel to be made. As there is now a further grave found case at Islington, we will place this on hold to see if that casualty is also to be added to the screen wall before sending to the manufacturer. This way we can have the names all on one extra panel.

Unfortunately, with the present travel restrictions in place, and many cemetery authorities shutting their cemeteries, I am unable to advise you of any timescales as to when any of these cases may be progressed once received in UK Area.

Some time ago I forwarded all the documentation (from Verrieres to Chris) needed to have CSM Pirie`s name moved from Brookwood to Lambshill in Glasgow . Since Chris left us there had been (despite the promises) no update from the CWGC as to when the grave would be marked , Today ,following a follow up call from Verrieres the CWGC apologising for the oversight in the updating of those concerned ,have confirmed that the `Unmarked` plot now has a grey granite CWGC headstone . Job done .
