This is a rough translation from the Colditz Museum brochure written in German by Regina Thiede

Earlier this year, the Colditz Museum purchased the uniform of Machiel (1900 – 1946).

Machiel was one of 60 Dutch officers in Colditz and the Dutch “Escape officer”together with Pat Reid, the British pendant.

The nickname “Vandy” was given to Machiel by the Brits.Machiel was involved in a number of activities such as the attempt to escape by Lieutenant Kruimink and Lieutenant Peter Storie-Pugh. And, for the coordination of the successful escape of Francis Steinmetz and Hans Larive through a manhole.

Machiel was killed in action in 1946 during the fighting on Java /Indonesia

    RIP Machiel.
