My old dear kindly bought myself, Fishwife, & Sprog α und β 'Explorer Tickets' to Pompey Historic Dockyards.
£44 for access all areas, valid for a year, on a site that we've previously been cautious to spend too much at or just visited a couple of ships.
Harbour tour, Waterbus to Alliance & Explosion all included.
Caught the display of Armada maps just before they went back to archive too. Very very good.
Hoping some pics worked as got the proper camera out for the first time in ages. Views of carriers from Victory's wardroom made me come over a bit funny.

What a site. Both carriers in, Victory currently unguided free access, as is Alliance. Mary Rose finally not just a water-hidden heap of wood.
Well worth considering even if only vaguely in the Pompey area.

When I visited unfortunately I missed any guided tour of Victory. But Alliance was absolutely brilliant (with a tour by an ex-submariner).

  6. I visited Fort Stevens on the Oregon coast this week, it was disappointing as the building was about the size of my apartment... and a goodly part of that was their gift shop. There were two staffers hanging out outside playing frisbee golf!
On the other hand, the Oregon Military Museum has tanks, it has artillery, it has trucks, it has a staff that is interested in the stuff on site (and some have even driven/been in the same models!).

I forgot to add, the tank museum in Ontario has a very polite and kind staff. I explained that I wanted to buy one of their coffee mugs as I would likely never get their and they let me buy it and they shipped it out that day!

sofia carbone The Queen's Royal Hussars Museum

    Hello!
We are The Queen's Royal Hussars museum located in the historic town of Warwick!
We preserve and share the proud heritage of the British Army’s senior light cavalry regiment. The museum tells the story of The Queen’s Royal Hussars and its predecessor regiments, spanning over 300 years of service in conflicts across the globe, from the Battle of Dettingen and the Charge of the Light Brigade to both World Wars and modern operations.

Through an extensive collection of artefacts—including uniforms, medals, weaponry, photographs, and personal diaries—the museum offers a unique insight into the experiences of the regiment’s soldiers, their traditions, and the pivotal battles they fought in. Our interactive displays, including a digital medal archive, provide visitors with an engaging way to explore individual stories of bravery and service.

Beyond the exhibitions, we actively support historical research through our archive, assist visitors in uncovering family military histories, and run a program of events, including monthly talks and temporary displays. Whether you're a researcher, a military enthusiast, or simply interested in history, we welcome you to visit and discover the remarkable legacy of The Queen’s Royal Hussars.

For more information about the museum, our events, or research inquiries, please get in touch—we are always happy to share our history.

  9. My favourite museum in the area (Oregon) is the Oregon Military Museum. I wander by once a month or so during the season.
    Oregon Military Museum
They have several armored vehicles. Everything from an M114 (not an M113) to a Type-95 Ha-Go ( and maybe 15 all told)
They have a running liberty truck, several pieces of Japanese artillery (including 2 of a pretty rare mortar)
My least favourite museum is the one at Fort Stevens. They have an outside display in the salt air directly on the coast...

  10. Ooops,
I realized I had posted pretty much the same thing to this thread before.
I will remove if needed (or please remove if needed)

    JohnG505 Getting there......

Many years ago, I was very fortunate to visit The National Air Force Museum of Canada, at Trenton. We had just flown an E3D to Trenton and, as always, had some down time.

I realised, after climbing into the rear Gunner position on their Halifax bomber, there can't have been many more lonelier jobs in WW2.

I also realised, if I had to get out pretty quick, I was stuffed. Such a small space....God bless the tail/rear Gunner.

I would propose my home town which shows local history from year 1 until today icl, OFLAG Vb and the tunnel escape with B/W Film from 1940.
Since I am a member on the board I can show anyone around. Only the visitor pays a small amount,
    Stefan.
