Dangermouse, We visited the Naples & Capua region in 2017. The purpose was to find & visit the site of PG66 which is documented in other threads. This camp was used by the Royal Engineers from 1943 to 1945 as a Bailey Bridging School and all that remains is the Chapel they built . After the war it was used as a displaced persons camp and was in 2017 quite derilect except for a couple of housing blocks being refurbished by some east european refugees? Old Capua Walled town was inyteresting. Nearby is Royal Palace of Caserta - Wikipedia which is based on Versallies. Facinating place with no crowds like in Paris and from memory a lot cheaper to visit! It was used for a number of things during WW2 . Visiting Sorrento, Amalphi Coast and the nearby islands was a highlight of our trip to this area. Have a great trip
Thanks Geoff, I think we'll take a look at Capua camp remains and have wander round the old town too. That palace at Caserta looks worth a visit too!
The Palace of Caserta was HQ 15th Army Group for the Italian Campaign. It is vast with superb gardens behind it. Well worth a visit. Hedley Verity the Yorkshire and England cricketer is buried in Caserta CWGC Cemetery which is nearby. Regards Frank
