Hello, i am trying to research a nurse who served in WW2, however this is not my area of expertise so am struggling. What I know so far is a 'Lt. M.I.Mercer' lived at 120 Stradbroke Grove, Ilford and the medals for WW2 were issued from 'The Army Medical Office'. I believe this to be Lieutenant Margery Isabella Mercer, service number 213998. Who, in the London Gazette is: Commissioned as a Sister in Territorial Army Nursing Service 13/02/1942. transferred to Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps as Lieutenant, 06/01/1953 (seniority 11/01/1938). And then further promotions and a Territorial Decoration. Where can I gain further information to confirm the address for the lady I have found in the London Gazette? Or other research avenues/your thoughts?
These may, or may not, be one and the same person and may, or may not be the person you are looking for: Birth First name(s) Margery I Last name Mercer Birth quarter 2 Birth year 1915 Mother's maiden name Hagger District Chesterfield County Derbyshire 1939 Register First name(s) Margery Last name(s) Mercer Birth date 23 May 1915 Sex Female Marital status Single Institutional role Officer Occupation State Registered Nurse Address City General Hospital Herries Road, Sheffield Place Sheffield C.B. County Yorkshire (West Riding) Death Name: Margery Isabella Mercer Death Age: 87 Birth Date: 23 May 1915 Registration Date: May 2002 Registration District: Bury St edmunds There is a 1963 record at 120 Stradbroke Grove of: Kenneth G Mercer Margery I Mercer A possibility that they are brother and sister
Many thanks. is there anything to confirm the lady on the 1963 record is the same person as the 1939 register?
The UK Nursing Registers for 1940,1943 & 1946 (on ancestry) all give this as the only Margery Isabella Mercer. MERCER, Margery Isabella Registration number 88044, registered London 25 June 1937. Qualified at the Royal Infirmary, Bradford 1934-1937 by examination. address: 80 Portman Road, Crosby, Scunthorpe. The 1939 Register for 80 Portman Road, Crosby MERCER, William C. born 8.7.1876, married, electrician. MERCER, Florence Maud, born 7 ?March 1878, Married, housewife. Possible marriage of William & Florence giving a North London connection: 11th April 1914 at Christ Church, Highbury, Islington. William Charles MERCER, age 38, bachelor, electrical engineer, of 32 Rotherham Rd, ?Halfray , Sheffield. Florence Maud HAGGER, age 36, spinster, of 107 Highbury Hill, London N. William had moved around a bit, probable entries in the census are 1901 with widowed father in Wigan, 1911 boarding in Batley, Yorks. Both as an electrical engineer & born Wigan. William may have been away in the army in WW1 as the only two other post 1915 Mercer/Hagger births are: Kenneth G. MERCER Oct-Dec 1920 Sheffield Registration District Stanley MERCER Jan-Mar 1920 Salford RD. If this nurse moved to London post WW2 then these other entries may be her. No other Mercers at any of these addresses: 1948 Margery I MERCER, London Clinic, 20 Devonshire Place, St Marylebone 1951 Margery I MERCER, St Stephen's Hospital, Fulham Road, Chelsea Other non hospital entries: 1949 Marjorie I MERCER, 294 West End Lane Hampstead 1949 & 1951 Margery Isabella MERCER, 32 Clifton Gardens, Maida Vale. 1950 & 1952 Marjorie I MERCER, 47 Chiltern Court, Baker Street NW2 In the 1939 Register 120 Stradbroke Grove Road, Illford, is occupied by Charles A TURNER , born 1894 & Ethel TURNER born 1890.
Nothing whatsoever I'm afraid. The reason I said that Kenneth and Margery may be siblings is that it looks like they could share the same mother's maiden name. What is the source and date of your reference to Stradbroke Gove?
Many thanks for the link, I will have a read of it tomorrow. The address is from a set of medals I have which are in the box of issue addressed to Lt. M.I.Mercer at 120 Stradbroke Grove, Ilford which were issued from The Army Medical Office. It is likely the box and medals are to the person from the research and the address is post WW2. Thanks Again
An online tree on ancestry with evidence shows William Charles MERCER died in 1950 in Scunthorpe. His executors were his widow Florence & Kenneth George MERCER, salesman. This tree also shows Florence died in Ilford in 1960. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/115833468/person/342283214087/facts I don't have access to it but I think the 1921 census for the family should link Margery & Kenneth as brother and sister.
