Can anyone pin down with which Squadron the aircraft in these photos served ? The pictures are actually post-war (1946 I believe) and were taken at Nurnberg. The chap sitting on the tail plane with his hand on the fuselage is my Dad and apparently this Mossie was used for an express courier service between the UK and Nurnberg during the War Crimes Trials. The hanger in the background is marked up for the US '913th Air Engineering Squadron' and I'm assuming that there are US Mustangs in the background. Any extra detail would be appreciated. Rich.
The code YH equates to 21 Squadron which operated with the Mosquito VI. 1947. The aircraft code RF897 is of a DH98 Mosquito F8. VI. One of 300 built by Standard Motors.
Thanks Peter, I thought that you'd know this one. Interesting that it's as late as 1947. Dad wasn't sure anymore. At the end of the war he was transferred along with some other 11 Air Formation Signals personnel to Nurnberg where he worked on the teleprinter service. Would you know what sort of duties 21 Squadron had in 1947 ? Rich
Wiki, (& other sites), put them in the right place at the right time: No. 21 Squadron RAF - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia During the invasion the Squadron was flying night intruder attacks against German targets. The Squadron moved to RAF Gutersloh in December 1944. It provided a courier services between Blackbushe and Nuremberg in support of the Nuremberg Trials before it was disbanded on 7 November 1947.
Thanks Adam, why didn't I think of that ? I think that I can feel a model coming on. Does anyone do a decent Mosquito VI model ?
I think that I can feel a model coming on. Does anyone do a decent Mosquito VI model ? I've been meaning to do a plane for a long while, a Mosquito being the first choice. - The Tamiya 1/48th ones look the best I've seen outside of real esoterica (72nd ones seem nice too), and they do it in a variety of marques: 1/48 Aircraft Series - Some reviews here: Mosquito Models
Kev, is that 'Yep' someone does do a decent model ? Put me out of my suspense then and tell me who ! I haven't modelled for thirty years but it occurs to me that a model of a Mossie with a 1:72 Dad on the tail would be quite a talking point Well, it'd make him laugh anyway. Rich
