According to sources I've read, there were a total of 25 reconnaissance flights over New Zealand - six of those over Auckland. The majority of those flights were from one of the two German raiders that operated in NZ waters. According to the captain's logs, the HSK-1 Orion severely damaged its Arado 196A and wound up with a Nakajima E8N as a replacement.

There were also two reported sightings of submarines in the Hauraki Gulf (the entrance to Auckland's main harbour). Most of the sorties were during the early years (1940-1942), before the Americans set up shop in New Zealand.
