I'm really getting into 'Operation Greenline' research and where 158 Brigade/1st Ox and Bucks attack on Cahier fall in but I've got several key issues... 1. Who were the enemy? Was it 276 Division in the area of Evrecy at the time? 2. What were the wider aims? I've found the 15th Scottish - G - War Diary and are there any other documents that may explicitly say 'break out'? Also any decent books on it at all? Not too expensive mind... as I've been ripping my diminishing MPB hair out a wee bit
Maybe you already know for this but ... on The Royal Highland Fusiliers web page you can find book about 44th Lowland Brigade from 15th Scottish Division and its free to download </title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <title> - Online Books I don't know if this can help you in your research but it cost you nothing
Swiper, It's also worth noting that a lot of books advertised on line by Amazon and the like can be viewed sometimes in their entirety. Regards Tom
7 RWF (158 Bde) did capture prisoners from 276 Inf Div in Evrecy on 17 Jul. What threw me a little bit is that I have 1 Ox & Bucks down as 71 Bde who, under 53 Div, were to clear the northwest bank of the Odon, i.e. Cahier. 158 Bde were attached to 15 Div and held in reserve until late on the 16 Jul when they (7 RWF) were brought up to take Evrecy itself. Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs here - just trying to get it straight in my own mind. Regarding the greater purpose, I would think the dates are significant - conceived on 12 Jul and executed just before Goodwood (and when Cobra should have been). As I see it they are deliberate, limited 'fixing' attacks to stop those German troops from interfering with attempts to break out elsewhere. It is possible that this series of attacks was a response to Bradley's postponement of Cobra, to keep the pressure on the Hun and off the Yanks; not sure of the dates of that off the top of my head.
Johnny Also in support for "Greenline" and "Pomegranate" the two fient operations by Monty on the 15th July to draw german armour and troops away before "Goodwood" on the 20th July were the 121st and 10th Medium Regts RA. 5 AGRA. Cheers Rob
I don't know how I managed to miss the other thread! 59 Div history on Op Pomegranate (16-19 Jul): 21 Army Group plan was now to make a series of southward thrusts on a broad front, in order to keep the main German forces in the east and away from the intended American break out at the base of the Cherbourg Peninsula.
I know this is a hell of a bump, but Ron, where did you find they were to draw armour and resources away from Goodwood? I've not found a reference to that anywhere and am pretty certain that the distances involved are too great.

Refering to my notes it states Dempsey's,'tennis over the Orne'. By launching GreenLine & Pomegranate west of the Orne, and then Goodwood east of it only 2 days later, Dempsey's aim was to force the enemy to bring Divisions across from the East (Goodwood) and hit them with air force as they would be so vulnerable trying to cross over. Rob
This is very interesting, as it pretty much directly conflicts ALL the contemporary operational evidence! I wonder if Dempsy advocated that to make Goodwood look like Monty's major blunder and dodge criticism... As the original documentation is in pretty stark contradiction to it (what I have thus far analysed.)
