Looks like one of those ex servicemen that that settled in France and kept their nationality. These were interned by Vichy....the treatment meted out by Vichy could be very harsh. No friends of Britain, they wished for a Nazi victory and the New Order.

Nearly 30 years ago, saw a British major remembered on a Brittany civilian memorial as a victim of Nazism always a mystery to me before the days of the on line CWGC...thought he was an ex servicemen who had settled in Brittany. Then further research revealed he was a serving British soldier...a Jedburgh who was murdered when captured wounded, as a member of the Francis team. Then I was able to close the loop and visit his French cared for grave he shares with others.
