Sapper Peter Thackray, 240 Field Coy, RE, was my uncle. He died on 3/11/1944 at Breda, we believe, possibly during Operation Infatuate. My brothers and I are trying to find out as much as we can about him, his service, the circumstances of his death, and about 240 Field Coy at that time. Does anyone know anything at all?

Nigel, the war diary for 240 Field Company at the National Archives might be worth a look to see what the unit were doing. There might be a brief mention of your uncle's death.

This is the National Archive reference for the war diary:

    • WO 171/1600, 240 Company, 1944 Jan.- Dec.
