Sapper Peter Thackray, 240 Field Coy, RE, was my uncle. He died on 3/11/1944 at Breda, we believe, possibly during Operation Infatuate. My brothers and I are trying to find out as much as we can about him, his service, the circumstances of his death, and about 240 Field Coy at that time. Does anyone know anything at all?
Hello and welcome to the forum. The first thing you need to do is apply for his service records, they will give you more details about his service. https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records CWGC Link for other members http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2034392/THACKRAY,%20PETER%20LEDGARD Other members should be along soon to offer more help. Nigel, the war diary for 240 Field Company at the National Archives might be worth a look to see what the unit were doing. There might be a brief mention of your uncle's death. This is the National Archive reference for the war diary: WO 171/1600, 240 Company, 1944 Jan.- Dec. Lee
Have no evidence but I'm guessing he may have been injured during the liberation of breda on Oct 29 1944. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Armoured_Division_(Poland)
