Hi Marc Welcome, as you have noted Laurie has not been on here for 2 years, but maybe he will respond, in the meantime: UK, British Prisoners of War, 1939-1945 Name: P L Jolivet Rank: Sig. Army Number: 7729 POW Number: 76421 Camp Type: Stalag Camp Number: 8C Camp Location: Kunau Kr Sprottau, Sagan, Poland Section: South African Land Forces : Officers and Other Ranks TD
Hi TD much thanx for your interest and response. I haven't followed WW2talk at all and fluked the visit after my brother found the above pictures with my dad in them. You have given us some important information that we are able to research. Much appreciated. Regards Marc J
Normally researching someones military history needs to start with obtaining their service records and for South Africans I believe that is : SANDF Documentation centre. . The e-mail address is sandfdoc@mweb.co.za Tel 0123226350. - SANDF TD edited to add: We have a number of members based in Italy who research POW's and their camps, they may be able to help later when you have more info about where he was held
Hi Marc - I logged in today by chance and saw your reply. How amazing this is! My dad didn't say much about any of this period like most of his generation it seems. I'd love to hear anyhting you gleaned from your dad about his experiences. Did he know my dad before they made their escape and what were conditions like - anything and everything really! I hope you see this as I'd given up hearing from anyone and hadn't been back on the site for some time. I look forward to hearing from you.
Laurie and for other interested in this post here are two resources I have managed to collect regarding my Dad, Sig Pierre Jolivet and the others POW's that were interned with him. The book, In the Bag, Peter Ogilvie, Newman Robinson 1975. Published by Macmillan South Africa publishers. Chronicles the story of the South Africans taken POW at Sidi Rezegh, including my dad. The other concerns the SBS DVD "Long March to Freedom" that most POW's that were interned in the eastern countries went through.
