Award Military Medal L/Cpl. Ivor Royles, 3rd Parachute Battalion, 1st Parachute Brigade, Y Division, 5 Corps (4198210)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 26th February 1943 at RAGOUBET EL ARAAN, BOU ARADA (Tunisia Sheet 41, 7097). This N.C.O’s platoon was overrun on Pt. 375 and at one time he was in command of the only section on the hill. He was completely surrounded by enemy and was giving all round fire orders. Such was his leadership that his section maintained its fire the whole time and inflicted many casualties. He was under almost continuous M.G. fire and was heavily mortared; prior to the counter attack he had also to endure a heavy barrage from our own artillery. Despite all these trials he kept his mens’ morale up and it was largely due to his magnificent leadership that the counter attack was so successful.
