HBO's "Conspiracy" with Kenneth Brannagh playing Reinhard Heydrich is quite interesting. Eventhough it's clearly a romanced version of the Wannsee conference, and some of the characters are more stereotypes than anything else, the bureaucratic side of the Final Solution is rather well conveyed.

share the sentiment with you all: the Pianist & Schindler's list. 'd like to take this opportunity to introduce: BBC "Auschwitz - The Nazis & 'The Final solution'". It's double DVDs. 'm afraid you need to purchase it as it might not be available in rental movie stores. The film was based on meticulous research unfolding a really, truly sad story!
Moreover, here is a free online documentary concerning the Rape of Naning which last for two hours with English subtitles.

May I pray with humble and sincere piety for all those who suffered.

Anyone seen the boy with the striped Pyjamas?

The last one I've seen that was good was The Counterfeiter. To be honest though all are very thought provoking and good in their own way.

Slightly off topic has anyone seen the Russian film Come and See ? That is a good film about the atrocities commited by the SS in the East.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a very good and moving film. In the UK it has a 12A certificate (under 12s must be accompanied by an adult), and I think that parents of young children should exercise caution before taking them to see it. The old 12 certificate would probably have been more appropriate.

One other point is that people who insist on complete historical accuracy may be put off by a couple of highly unlikely events; an 8 year old surviving the initial selection at a death camp and the 2 boys being able to approach the wire, one from inside and one from outside the camp. I think that you should suspend disbelief and take it for what it is, the Holocaust through the eyes of 2 8 year old boys.

Another issue that has attracted some criticism is that everybody speaks in English accents. I had no problem with this. It's a British film with British actors. Sub titled German would have limited the audience and accented English is unnecessary as there are no native English speaking characters so no need to differentiate the foreigners. Also, it makes the characters seem to be people like us rather than 'weird foreigners doing weird foreign things that would never happen here.'

I agree that Come and See is also good.

Out of the ones I've seen, I think that The Pianist and Schindler's list would be on the top of it.

Escape From Sobibor is the most disturbing film I have ever seem. As others have mentioned, the scene where the baby is taken from the mother, I cried and cried.

I believe the film is very accurate, it was made mainly due to the efforts of surviving escapees who have made it their life's work to bring the truth of what happened to the attention of the world, and for this reason they were quite meticulous to get the details right.

It affected me very strongly this film, especially as it was first shown in 1983(?) on the 14th of October, the day of the escape, which also happens to be my birthday.

    Sophie's Choice with Meryl Streep.
The scene where she has to decide which of her two children will live.
    Very moving film.

I know this is wrong of me, but I tend to avoid films on this subject as it is so upsetting.

That said, our school sat us all down to watch "The Pawnbroker" with Rod Steiger during the remainder of the summer term following our O-levels (i.e. 1977). It was quite an old film even then and so I can't say how it compares with what's gone since, but nevertheless it was very powerful at the time and deeply disturbing.

    Hi,

I was really moved by 'For Those I loved' 1983. A mini-series based on a true story which starred Michael York. How a boy lost his family and survived the war only to face further tragedy.

I was most moved by the way it focussed on him and his family and how he gradually lost them, and then his struggle to survive alone.

A story so unbelievable, it could only be true.

Hutchie, amazing that you choose this one..
When i watched this episode i thought"Gee!At last, someone filmed soldieŕs reactions not like if they ever knew that they were about to discover a proof of the final solution"
Perfect actor's playing, they're feeling something terrible happened to the poor soul in this camp, but cannot precisely figure it out.

Anyone know what film that was banned around 1980-1985. My wife remembers watching some women on stolls with razor blades, it was banned around the time "The Evil Dead" was banned.
She also remembers babies being experimented on.
