As there seem to be a number of well informed people on this thread relating to AB 64 Paybooks, I wonder if I might ask for any thoughts on the following matter.

A few years ago I became the owner of all my Grandfather`s wartime material, letters, medals and so on. However his AB 64 was not amongst the many items, even though it included many trivial items such as buttons, cap badges and his stripes.

As he died in Burma I had assumed that his AB 64 might not have been returned to the family, although I thought this would seem unusual given that so many trivial items appear to have been sent back in his belongings. Over time I have been asking relatives who might have inherited this book if they have it, but to no avail. Until recently I had almost given up on this quest by recently I noted you could apply for a copy of the "Soldier`s effects records" from the National Army Museum. Although a long-shot I obtained a copy and was suprised to see that at the bottom of the page it indicates that the Army Paymaster received his AB 64.

What I can`t figure out is what then happened to it as I`m unable to understand what the document says exactly and I wonder if someone who is experienced in these matters might be interpret what this indicates. It looks like it says Dispatched To: Retainer or Retained, I`m not sure. Then mentions "Mother" proceeded by a collection of numbers. As far as I`m aware his Mother never passed this on in her final days with the remainder of his stuff.

So, the question is, was it retained by the Paymaster? and was that a common practise. Even more important, does this mean it might still survive somewhere or do I have a cat-in-hells chance of finding it still.?

    Please see the attached file.

Any help would be really appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    John

I've added RA casualty cards to 11 of these men - Taylor-Lowen, Weaver, Wood, Newall, Oexle, Brunt, Hudston, Hart, Foddy, Fullick and French - this has given a cause of death for Fullick that I hadn't been able to find before and details of the illness that Foddy & Brunt succumbed too.

    Thanks

I've made a few more updates - I've added a letter to Foddy which was sent home with photos of his grave, also up to date grave photos for Foddy, Nicholas & LeWarne plus a photo of Seager.

I just wish I could add more detail to some of them, only having a name, unit and date doesn't do them justice - I guess for most that wont come until WW2 service records are released.
