I am trying to locate as much information as possible about the fate of HMS Sultan leading up to the fall of Singapore in February 1942.

In particular I am very interested in HMS Repulse survivor AB Leonard Thomas Webber, service number JX151854 who disappeared seemingly without trace and was declared dead 16 February 1942.

Any assistance, in particular pointers towards naval records covering the fall of Singapore will be very much appreciate.

    Thank you.

    Welcome,

HMS Sultan was the RN shore base at Singapore - if you do a Google search you will find quite a lot of information. There is also a FEPOW site that may be of help. Those survivors that weren't shipped out in December had to escape as best they could, many on merchant ships (some acting as naval reserves) that sailed up to 15 Feb 1942, many didn't make it. I have written a chapter about the Flight from Singapore, but while that would give you some background it won't help with your specific enquiry. See:
Merchantmen in Action: Evacuations and Landings by Merchant Ships in the Second World War eBook: Roy V. Martin: Amazon.co.uk: Books

It was not Britain's finest hour!

I am trying to locate details of a Charles Leonard LOAR who was killed 16 Feb 1942 HMS Sultan SINGAPORE. I have found his name appears on the Memorial in Plymouth however little else.

I am travelling to Singapore shortly and thought I would visit a memorial if there is one, however I have not been able to find anything on the net to date.

I would appreciate any advice and help

    Thanks

I am interested in Stoker 2nd Class D/KX 134336 William Ball who died on 26th Feb 1942 (HMS Sultan)

I presume that he was one of the unlucky ones who was left behind and had to fend for himself.
Any info about his service of how he ended up would be of use please

    :D

    Hi The Cooler King,

I am in a similar situation, researching my great great Uncle who shares some of the same details. I have found a William Ball in the UK, British Army & Navy Birth/ Marriage/ Death records on Ancestry.co.uk - I don't know whether you have access to this but in case you haven't, I have (hopefully!) attached a copy of the record. It gives the date of death as 16th February 1942, place Singapore and cause of death as 'missing, death on war service presumed'. I'm pretty new to military history so I am fumbling my way through somewhat, but am happy to share anything I find out with you, if you'd like! My great great Uncle has the same DoD and cause, but the place is given as Banka Straits. I am really interested in finding out as much as possible about what it was like over there and how to interpret the information given on the military records. Hopefully I can help you out too! :)

    Hi All,

I am similarly searching for any info on what happened on 16th of February 1942 in Singapore.

Found the grave of my missing person in Plymouth Naval Memorial
NORMAN MANSFIELD LEONARD, Telegraphist Royal Navy (originally on HMS Prince of Wales) then HMS Sultan.
    D/SSX30203 - Date of Presumed Death: 16/02/1942 aged 20.
    Grave Panl 101, Column 3
Son of Leonard Harry & Florence Mansfield of Hayes Middlesex.
    Missing presumed Killed.

I now live in Singapore, and trying to find out what happened to survivors of HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse bombings. I know for sure Norman was brought to Singapore alive after the bombing.

Any information or where to look in Singapore for info appreciated. Maybe this will help others too.

    Hi Tricky Dicky,

Many thanks for that list it is much appreciated. I am curious to know if personnel that were listed MPK ever had that status updated? One entry intrigues me - BURKE, Edward, Ordinary Seaman, RNVR, D/MD/X 3139, MPK - How can I find out if his death was confirmed. where he was born etc? He may be my missing link in my search

Like others on this thread I am interested in the Fall of Singapore. My father in law appeared at Singapore just in time to escape successfully. I think he may have been there under an assumed name. Any suggestions how I might trace him?

As his CWGC details refer only to the Plymouth Naval Memorial one can conclude that his body was never found.

    BURKE, EDWARD
    Rank:Ordinary Seaman
    Service No D/MD/X 3139
    Date of Death:16/02/1942
Regiment/Service:Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve H.M.S. Sultan.
Panel Reference: Panel 77, Column 1. Memorial:PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL

It would be worth you contacting CWGC and ask them for their policy re confirmation or not of death - link to their site - Find War Dead

If you are looking for someone who is under an assumed name then I guess you would need to know that name unless there are other details that might result in finding them, e.g for CWGC details, parents names, wifes name, etc etc

    Thanks Tricky Dicky,
I think with the service number I might be able to find more details in the PRO

Thanks for that list. My uncle, Able Seaman Trevor Evans, is on it.

HI I have just started researching my Great Uncle and note he is listed as a casualty from The Prince of Wales.

    His details are:

    TUCKER, James, Act/Petty Officer, D/JX 126466, (ex-Repulse), MPK

What do all the letters and numbers mean after his name and how can I use them to find out more info about his Naval career.

    Thanks in advance

    John

    Hi John

Welcome - I'm not naval, but I will contact a member who is -

D/JX 126466 - is his service number, the D represents the location where he 'enlisted' but I'm not sure where that is

    MPK = missing presume killed

Thanks so much. What you have provided so far is very useful.

I would be grateful if your naval contacts can help me further.

    Best wishes

    John
