Education officers tend to be ex-teachers in my experience, as it involves working with the national curriculum. The Aldershot post would be a good one for someone with a teaching qualification and an interest in military history.

About the same pay scale as a junior teacher by the looks of it.

yeah it looks it. They're quite interesting posts, because its a bit more fun than teaching in a classroom and you get to 'get your hands dirty' a bit more. And its a very good stepping stone for progressing on to being an Education manager or something similar.

I'd seen that one H... You realise sir, that you have a duty to your friends to get some sort of job at the Tank Museum -_-.
We promise we wouldn't break anything after hours, and the Gosport-kinder is nearly house-trained now, so even he would probably behave himself (maybe still best to check his pockets on the way out though).

Heh heh heh! The salary is a bit crap but as you point out A, the fringe benefits are considerable, even if they don't have a 38t let alone Salma Hayek!

There arent many jobs of that level coming up in Museums right now, or with that level of pay, so that should be hotly contested. Interesting project, 20 years too early for me sadly!

I see they're very much looking for an ex scaley rather than someone with museum experience. Looks a walk-in for a retired Signals officer.

That might turn around and bite them on the bum one day. Running a serious museum like that is not a job for an bluff old cove with no previous experience of the heritage sector....

They've re-advertised that one. I would guess that they're having problems getting hold of someone with experience of the heritage sector who can also jump through the 'signals hoops' that they've put up.

Its been a common theme in military museums recently that the director has almost always been 'of the regiment'. Whilst I think its important for someone to know what they're taking on I dont think it should be the be all and end all. I can think of more than a few military museums that have been managed by ex-officer that have been run pretty badly.

    Just my two penneth.

I think (?hope) we are moving away from the bluff old cove approach to museum management. As you say, technical knowledge of the subject is important but even more important are areas like financial control or curatorial understanding etc etc.

PS Does it interest you James?

I would love to do a job like that mate. However its probably a way off for me yet, I need a bit more on the CV before I try for something like that. I work in Museum administration at the moment, but the amount of snobbery involved in this profession is pretty galling sometimes. Its virtually impossible to do anything meaty without a postgrad qualification.

I have heard a few stories of people with all the right qualifications and experience being turned down for a job for ridiculous reasons. But by the same token the RN Sub museum and the RM Museum have recently appointed 'civvies' as directors, and to hear the outcry you would think they had appointed martians.

IMO the most important aspects in museum management at the moment are financial knowledge (ie, cutting costs and keeping them down), learning and access (working with schools etc), and networking (partnerships, attracting funding, etc). Those kind of things are hard learnt. Whereas I think a good brain will be able to learn the regimental march, battle honours, VC winners etc.
