I'm firmly in the camp that finds the obsessive walt-hunters as tiresome as the walts really.
    Saddoes on both sides.

My only interest in any form of prosecution is when people get hurt, as in that bloke that pretended to be a military doctor recently.
Other than that; point & laugh. We have enough laws.

I'm pretty new to the Commonwealth forums so this is the first time I've seen an article about an impostor from one of those nations. I do read about these types of guys all of the time here in the U.S. Some are so good at it it is years before they are found out, while others are so bad at it, even me, who never served, can pick them out.

I work in the administrative side of law enforcement here, and we had a guy come into the office who had just plead guilty to a felony and was given probation, and was reporting in. He was wearing a U.S. Army dress uniform, but everything on it was just off. Now mind you, he wasn't an impostor, because it was his uniform and his ribbons and badges from the Mississippi National Guard, but he had been out for over ten years. I guess he thought if he showed up in uniform, the judge would ease off a bit. Anyway, the ribbons were crooked, he had no tie on, the shirt under the jacket was the wrong color, and he had brown shoes on instead of black. I proceeded to call one of our supervisors, who happened to be a retired U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Major with 31 years in the service including 4 years as a D.I. at Parris Island, and described the guy. He went out into the lobby, asked the guy some questions, and when the guy failed to give satisfactory answers was given a dressing-down so severe he just about pissed his pants.

Fonz, I think you guys handled it right. A little public exposure and humiliation is surely punishment enough for 98% of these guys. The ones who use their masquerade to claim jobs and benefits that they have no right to...well, there are already statutes covering that. I gather this poor fool in Canada is now getting death threats. That is carrying things way too far.

I agree that the reaction is a little over the top, but I shudder to think of the day when the imposter might be a suicide bomber.

How is it that these sorts of imposters have always got to impersonate military people?

Why do they never impersonate lifeguards? Or football players? Or public servants 'heroically' doing paperwork? High Civi Servants get medals and awards, so I don't see the difference really. I suppose its not glamourous enough for them, but really, in their own minds, high civil servants feel they do a much more important job than anything the military do. I mean, it's the only office job where you can recieve awards for service, after all.
Just looking at the antics of TVs 'Yes Minister', the only time Hacker really put it over the Civil servants was and got them to back down entirely is when he threatened to link departmental budgetary figures, (and the restrictions thereof) directly to Civil Service awards. EVERY department suddenly came in 'on budget', (around four percent?) with each one of them wilting at the prospect of loss of awards.

An imposter could make all sorts of claims impersonating a civil servant. How he 'won' the battle against waste, how he 'improved' the lives of the people in his department and the public they represented. No-one would turn a hair, even if you claimed a full chest of awards!

It shouldn't be forgotten that during this fool's escapade was a week after two Canadian Soldiers had been killed as was the

killer and tempers were pretty high especially when one of the victims was guarding our National memorial - let's say he was lucky
    to make it homeā€¦

    Cheers

The imposter will be charged by the police for impersonating a soldier - might be an object lesson for others not to do the same
    Cheers

dont support his actions...he had several chances to come clean on the day. He did not; however, actually say he served and only gave credit to those who did.

Wearing medals that this fellow was not entitled to wear was more than a strong statement that he had served in the Armed Forces. If he was wearing medals awarded to a deceased relative and worn in honour of that relative they should have been worn on the right hand side.

People do not have to have served in the Armed Forces to attend a Remembrance event so why would someone dress up as though they had? Reporters covering these events could ask anyone what attending the service means to them. A person who has never been in the Forces and is not attempting to impersonate having been so can give an honest answer as to why they are there. It seems a straightforward enough matter to me.
