GOTTLIEB, R.A.M.C. for the 3 weeks preceding May 3rd 1945 acted with extreme energy and initiative in dealing with the Germans for the benefit of prisoners of all nationalities at STALAG XIA ALTENGRABOW. He bullied & threaten with their lives the Stalag officials and greatly ameliorated the worst abuses, stopping a march from the camp, organising the evacuation of the Lager by establishing communication with the American Forces. He obtained food & clothing from the Germans, at a time when many were suffering from starvation by similar methods of threatening & bullying.
