That's right, Mark. If you don't get your request in shortly after they open you have to wait another 3 months before they accept enquiries again.

    Best of luck.

  2. Sorry I've been away for so long! I'd be grateful for any help. I've got the documents from Glasgow and I'm intruiged that he joined the 15div signals after returning to UK ... seemingly prior to the end of the war(unless i'm mistaken).. Which we weren't aware of, and was sent back to 'NWE' (northwest Europe?) For a few months. We do have a photo of him in Hamburg in army uniform, but we assumed that was on his way back to being repatriated.... Any assistance on the abbreviations and handwriting would be most appreciated.... Rmkgf? X4 a list? Waiting for report from swiss red cross.

X4 List means he was on the list for 'unposted reinforcements' (i.e. waiting to be allocated to a unit).

If you upload good sized images of the documents (in full), I'd be happy to help decipher them and I'm sure others will be, too.

  4. Thanks

First sheet--will do the other when time permits.

    1) I've simply 'expanded' all abbreviations to full terms.

    2) My geography for Scotland is extremely poor. I've just guessed at place-names, you'll have to correct them.

    3) You should be able to track down the details of his capture. Reference to being on a 'casualty list' does not necessarily mean he was wounded. Cas/133/43 is also noted. He was almost certainly taken in the Fall of Tobruk along with his whole battalion: Axis capture of Tobruk - Wikipedia

Here's some good listening on 2 Camerons--the interviewee was luckily absent from Tobruk
COCHRANE, PETER (Oral history); This has a bit about Inverness: Hall, Harry Girton 'Pym' (Oral history)

    3) Clearly you're going to need to check the Prisoner of War records to find out how on earth he ended up an internee in Switzerland and repatriated in 1944. An escaper? [Edit: looking at your much earlier posts, I see that you know this to be the case] There are Prisoner of War experts on this board, but I am not one of them.
