SDP - 24th Lancers are one of those 'mysterious' regiments due to the paucity of their war diaries...if you ever come across any details of their vehicle details, I would be most intrigued...NJVetter's pic of the carrier is the first time I have seen any 24L details ! Roddy
Roddy I have access to a few, in fact very few, bits and pieces. Unfortunately most/all of them have people stood in front of the vehicles with hardly a marking or number in view. I'll try to sort something out in the next few days and post here. No reply will mean I've found nothing. As I think I've said before somewhere, I knew the guy who wrote the War Diary and he kept things brief to say the least. The best images I've found to date are actually available on the IWM web site and show Ian Kerr's Crusader 'Arran' flying in some sort of tanks demo and also 'A' Squadron Crusaders on the Beeding Ranges in Sussex. I've a lovely picture of a Valentine.....but it has literally what appear to be dozens of people sat on it! All the best Steve
I have a Sergeant Northover, Edward Service Number 319072 in the Rennes Military Hospital starting 9 July. His Service Number seems to indicate he may have been with the 24th Lancers. Can anyone confirm that he was in the 24th and any details?
Norman - Just had another look at the second pic you posted almost a year ago...this must have been a parade of sorts as all their boots are v shiny...also, can you make out the T Number on the rear of the carrier on the right in the original...? Roddy
While I can't confirm that he was not with 24L, I can't confirm that he was with them either. He is not mentioned in the Nominal Roll effective June 1944, the list of wounded and missing while serving with 24L or other regiments, the list of killed while serving with 24L or other regiments or in the regimental history 'None Had Lances'. I guess the only way forwards will be via his Service Records.
Hello, im new here and im not sure how to post a new topic so im just adding to this thread. Im researching my grandad sergeant sidney norton 407545 24th lancers rac he was killed in action on 17th june 1944. Im trying to work out if its possible where his last day was. So far im thinking it was possibly either around the village tilly-sur-seulles or near point 102/3 near cristot. Can anyone else give me any other possible locations please also does his name ring any bells please. Thank you
Hi steve thanks for your reply, ill keep checking back to catch any updates thank you kind regards shaun norton
Shaun He was killed during the late afternoon of the 17th June near the Parc de Bois Londe. Details are on page 99 of 'None Had Lances'. He is also mentioned several more times in the book. I can scan the appropriate pages if you wish. Quite a lot of information is provided. I think I may also have a photo of his grave in Bayeux Cemetery taken a number of years ago. Kind regards Steve
Thanks steve I managed to get hold of a copy of none had lancers from my library. It was a fascinating read. So I brought a copy from amazon to give to my dad.
Has anyone got any normandy or war time photographs of the 24th lancers either HQ, A, C, Or mainly B squadrons that they would be willing to show me please. After reading none had lancers it would be nice to see some pictures if possible. Plus im always looking for any pictures of my grandad sgt sidney norton B sqd, thank you
Shaun Photographs of 24L are extremely rare so I'm afraid all I can say is "good luck and happy hunting". There are a number in family collections but even those don't normally relate to their Normandy campaign period. Steve
Thanks steve, I always thought it was a long shot but you never know ) I was amazed to find several photographs of my grandad when he was in the 21st lancers in India on the web at least 6 I had never seen before. I keep searching 100's of images of d-day and sherman tanks etc. Could you tell me if there is a particular marking I should be looking out for to identify a 24th lancers tank? Thanks
I have found a page thats shows the numbers 995 and yellow symbols circle, square, triangle and a diamond would this help me?
995 was 24L. All 24L squadron markings were yellow. Diamond=HQ squadron. Triangle = A squadron. Square=B squadron and circle=C squadron.
Cool thanks steve, ive just remembered tho every picture im ever going to find will almost definitely be in black and white. So its going to be a bit like the old days when I used to watch snooker round my nannas in black and white. If I ever find anything ill post it cheers
