Adam welcome to the forum. By all means post your Granddads photos and any other information about him. Which one is your Granddad in the photos posted by RDC23?

    Cheers

Thanks all - My Granddad was Jim Hornbrook in the first two photos. I wasn't 100% sure whether he was in the 43rd Reconnaissance though I assume he must have been to be included in these pictures. In fact I think we have original copies of those photos posted. I'll check with the family that they're happy for me to post some (sure they would be) and I'll load some of those with his mates on there - hopefully including some chaps of interest to fellow members.

If I were curious to get a bit more detail on his service details - is there anywhere I could find that out please? I only know very high level details about him going through Northern Europe and being one of the first into Belsen.

    Appreciate your advice.

    Thanks,
    Adam

One of my Dad's cousins was Tpr John Robert Ashworth who was lost on 24 June 1944 with the Derrycuhiny. I have no details of his service other than what is available on this site (roll of honour).

Any help in filling in gaps, such as his role in the Reg't would be gratefully received.

My uncle was in the 161 Green Howards and was posted to Normandy to replace the men of C company. He firstly was in the universal Bren carrier named 'Agamemnon' but later became Lt Col Kinnersley's radio operator in an International Harvest M5 Command vehicle. His name was James Neville Blackwood - known as 'Blackie'.

Having trouble (as always) attaching the pictures!

Hopefully those pictures are accessible in the post above! Here is a picture of my uncle and the bren carrier 'Agamemnon' Germany 1945. I have some other pictures from Wasserstadt that I can also upload.

Does anybody have any other information on Jeremy L. Taylor, who wrote 'This Band Of Brothers'? Info such as where and when he was born/died (if indeed he's dead), and what his connection was, if any, to the Recce? Or any info on the White Swan Press, Bristol, the publishers?

    Steve,

Jeremy Taylor served with 43rd Recce Regiment for some months between 1941 and 1942 when he left the Regiment due to ill health.
I have found references to a Captain Jeremy Taylor serving with the Gloucestershire Hussars and the 23rd Hussars, and though it seems likely this was him I cannot confirm it. In a brief look at the London Gazette I cannot locate him. Possibly someone else on here can confirm his military service.

He acted as editor for the compilation of the 43rd Recce Regiment's unit history and this was published by White Swan Press in Bristol.
White Swan published a number of Regimental histories in the early post-war period, including Band of Brothers. I suspect that Jeremy Taylor may well have been the owner of this small publishing house, but once again I have no evidence of that.

I found this reference online from Marshfield in Gloucestershire:

On this former estate is the Rocks East woodland training centre which has several guided walks and wooden sculptures. Open most days with energetic walks leading to the old walled gardens. Across the lane leading down to St Catherines valley (Oakford Lane) lived Major Jeremy Taylor who was a Captain in the 23rd Hussars (Tank Regiment) and was decorated in World War II. He grew up on the estate in its heyday. He later worked as an Animal Wrangler in the film "Lawrence of Arabia" and performed the "long" camel riding shots for Peter O'Toole. He boasted wonderful evenings out with David Lean, Audrey Hepburn and Alec Guinness in Cairo. He then assisted in training the Indian Army with their horse regiments finally buying a bar and nightclub in Bath, Somerset before retiring to a wooden chalet beside a man-made lake in the woods within the old Rocks estate. He died peacefully in the RUH Bath a few years ago.

I cannot find any reference to a decoration, but it would be interesting to find out whether this is indeed the same Jeremy Taylor.

    Regards

Thanks Paul, it could well be. That info looks to have been written in 2010, so checking the death indexes for 'a few years ago' from 2010 I can see a Jeremy Crome Taylor dying in Somerset in 2003, or a Jeremy Taylor in 1990, but I'd guess that may be too early. I'll have a look into them in due course.

    Thanks for the leads!

Another mention of Major Jeremy Taylor:

22nd Armoured Brigade continued to see action against both German and Italian armoured formations, especially in the Knightsbridge "Box", with the Crusaders of 2nd RGH suffering particularly from the deadly German "eighty-eights" supporting the Italian Ariete Armoured Division. Between 2nd and 4th June 2nd RGH received more Grants and Honeys, but the battalion was still seriously understrength and even their replacement tanks were often not in the best of condition. The Gloucestershire men were thrown back into action on 4th June, and once more were soon taking heavy casualties. Major Jeremy Taylor, who was in a Honey of H Squadron Headquarters, recalled:-

". . . I saw the Colonel's tank stationary and by itself under Bir Beliefa. I saw a figure waving on the ground and went alongside them with my tank. Here I found Col. Birley who, despite both legs being practically shot off at the knee, had got himself out of the tank to wave for assistance for himself and his driver, Cpl. Dickinson, being badly wounded and concussed. Our Adjutant, Mike Muir, who had been acting as gunner in the Colonel's tank, had been killed as had the operator, Cpl. Froggart. We put the Colonel and Dickinson into a gunner's 15 cwt truck and they promised to take them back to a dressing station straight away. Col. Birley died on the way back but Dickinson survived, though with a badly broken jaw, shoulders wounded and concussion."

Hi, I haven't logged into the site for a while and I notice the format is different. I am having quite a lot if difficulty viewing photos in the new format. Also I notice that some of the photos I posted a while ago seem to have disappeared. Where there should be 3 thumbnails for example there is now only one. Am I the only one having problems with photos?
