never mind the tiger, i've just read on another forum that the A39 tortoise will be driving round the arena, that will be a very imposing sight, 70 tons of british steel :)

Lordy, that'd be compensation for the Tiger x10.
    Suddenly, I quite fancy going.

That would be on HMVF I assume?
    Ah,
    News Confirmed Vehicle Listings

Is that definitely running? Or just on outside display?

    VP -
That Churchill will be the restored job that Gerry's friend has brought down to show off - I was hoping that I could make it - but I can't make it now and Rick is going to gate crash as he is just starting to restore a Mk IV
    cheers

Rick - get hold of Gerry Chester and he will get you in anywhere - just whisper "Churchill" in his ear ....and show him pictures ...
    Cheers

Not disrespecting your old steed, but It's the Tortoise that really intrigues, Tom.

If it's really running I'd be frankly amazed; but I've spoken to staff at Bovington who say other machines have been run with pretty minimum effort after standing idle for 30+ years, so I'll keep an open mind.

Cor, a bit of Googling does indeed imply that she'll be running if all goes well:

That's pretty substantial news. Cheers Rick.

That's not what I call a Tank - more like a mobile Artillery fortress - 32 pound shell ? - the loader would be supermen in one day's fighting but I guess it had naval lifts et al although someone had to re stock the damn thing every night - even with a fork lift...
    Cheers

tom i'll give gerry a nudge and see if he can sneak me in under his coat, seriously though it would be great to meet some churchill tankies and hear a few stories and i'd also like to meet nigel montgomery aswell and have a chat about the pitfalls of churchill restoration, actually thinking about it, it might be best if he doesn't tell me. ignorance is bliss :)

ps. vp there's another tortoise on kirkcudbright that i've had my eye on, unfortunately the whole range area is classified as a site of special scientific interest so no vehicles can be recovered for restoration but who knows maybe they will change their mind one day and someone will get the go ahead to yank it off.

No problem for me as I live in Weymouth which is not far away. I do visit fairly regularly anyway and because the entry ticket doubles up as a year long pass, I like to donate the saved entry fee to the Tiger Tank restoration project upon my numerous return visits.

I also hope to visit Beltring for the first time this year.

You've said it now, in public and everything, so you're honour-bound to deliver. ;)

i'm sure i'll be able to come up with something, funnily enough i'll be speaking to him tonight about another project of mine (you'll love this one) so i'll mention the tortoise while i'm on the phone and to be honest i can't think of a better way of raising interest in bovvy and especially ww2 british armour than some indepth pics of what a tank looks like on the inside, which in my opinion is the most interesting bit but the one most seldom seen by the public, anyway i'll give it my best shot

    all the best
